Church of the Saints Pietro e Paolo

Mentioned in the twelfth century, as a church of the diocese of Verona, this church in Brentonico is one of the most illustrious in Trentino.
The portal is protected by a hallway (1532) which has the community’s metric measurements visible upon its piers.

The monumental bell tower of hewn stone has romanesque mullioned windows and a spire of Veronese fired brick.
Within is a nave and some interesting artwork.
The high altar (1598) is monumental, made out of Castione marble and supported by lions in red stone.

The original tabernacle, with grated door, was sculpted by Simone Carnori from Trento (1593) in Castione marble. The antipendium consists of an elegant plate of polychrome fired brick mosaic from Murano, from the sixteenth century.
The baroque arches leading into the chancel are of multi-coloured marble with statues in white stone.

The altar on the right is home to two large painted lithic high reliefs signed Guglielmo do Manuelis de Avio (1511), which represent: the Deposition with the symbols of the Passion and the Resurrection painted by an unknown artist who dated it 1635.
In the niche of red marble of the front altar (1621) has been placed a wooden statue of the Madonna (sixteenth century).
The church has six altars, all made of marble from local quarries and Castionese workshops.

To the right the great marble shrine contains the group of Mercy.
Behind, framed in marble is a large altar piece and at the side door, an elegant marble font.

To the left the first chapel houses the baptistery.
The ancient organ of Giovanni Bertè from Brentonico (XVII century) is important.

The beautiful wooden case is decorated with friezes and sculptures and the choir loft with five eighteenth-century paintings on wood.
The central panel bears the arms of Brentonico supported by two cherubs.
The beautiful altarpiece (St. Bartholomew) from the destroyed church of Fano is heritage of the church.
