Damiano Chiesa Cavern

In the places of the heroes, along Strada degli Artiglieri, in Rovereto.

One of the symbols of irredentism, Caverna Damiano Chiesa, on the initial slopes of Monte Zugna, recalls the sacrifice of the man from Rovereto, Damiano Chiesa.

You can reach it as the end of the civil pilgrimage which, beginning at the impressive Sacrario di Casteldante, climbs back up the winding road Strada degli Artiglieri. After having seen the 102 tombstones, dedicated to the memory of the gold-medal-decorated gunners seen along your way, in località Costa Violina, you will come upon the site of fierce fighting where you will find the cavern, near the “Baita degli Alpini”. A piece of 149 G artillery pointed towards Rovereto is preserved inside.

At the entrance you will see a tombstone, in memory of Damiano Chiesa, the Imperial subject who voluntarily enlisted in the Italian Army, who was captured on May 17, 1916, just as he was leaving the tunnel, and executed two days later at the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento.
