Fort Pozzacchio

Majestic fortification, entirely dug out of the stone of a cylindrical high-ground, to protect Vallarsa, which blocked access to the road to Rovereto.

Inside, arranged on three levels, you can visit rooms, large underground shelters, many service areas, connecting stairways, and artillery posts.

Fort Pozzacchio, or Valmorbia Werk, was realized by the Austrians starting in 1909 as a bulwark against a possible advance by the Italians. It was abandoned upon the outbreak of the war, and is still unfinished. It was repeatedly sought after by the two sides, for which it constituted an indispensable stronghold for control of the territory, together with the neighboring entrenched field of Matassone.

Realized according to state-of-the-art construction techniques which preempted the building of the bunkers of World War II, it was the object of a large recuperation operation. Discover the subterranean structure of the fortress: to give a clear definition to the spaces and emphasize the idea of its provisional nature, all the structures inserted were treated with a protective lead paint, of an intense orange color.

From the large embrasures, you can admire spectacular views of the entire Vallarsa, Pasubio, the Piccole Dolomiti, Passo Buole and Monte Zugna. There are two main access roads: from Trambileno, where a road leads to the parking lot near Pozzacchio, from which you can proceed by foot for 15-minutes. From Vallarsa, along the path which climbs from Valmorbia to Fort Pozzacchio after a nearly 40-minute walk.
